So, you’re coming to the Gilis. You’ve seen the photos, heard the stories, and now you’re facing the big question: Trawangan, Meno, or Air? Choosing the best Gili island to stay on depends entirely on the kind of trip you’re looking for. As a family that has called Gili Air home since 2014, we’ve had countless conversations with travellers over sunset cocktails about this exact dilemma.
Let's break it down. There is no single "best" island, but there is a best island for you. Think of the three Gilis as siblings with distinct personalities. Your job is to figure out which one you’ll get along with best.
Gili Trawangan, or "Gili T" as it's universally known, is the largest and most famous of the trio. It's the extrovert, the one who stays out latest and makes friends with everyone. If your idea of a holiday involves world-class diving by day and dancing on tables by night, Gili T is calling your name. The main strip is a bustling hub of dive shops, restaurants, and bars that pump out music until the early hours.
Pros: An endless supply of restaurants and bars, vibrant nightlife, lots of accommodation options for every budget, and a very social atmosphere.
Cons: It can be loud, crowded, and feel more like a party island than a peaceful escape. During peak season, the main beach can feel a bit overwhelming if you’re seeking tranquility.
Gili Meno is the middle child, a quiet soul content with its own company. It's the island for unplugging completely. Think deserted beaches, crystal-clear water, and the gentle chirping of birds as your soundtrack. This is the top choice for honeymooners or anyone whose primary goal is to disappear into a good book and do absolutely nothing.
Pros: Incredibly peaceful and romantic, pristine and often empty beaches, home to the famous underwater statues (Nest), and the best chance of feeling like you have an island to yourself.
Cons: Very limited dining and nightlife options. Outside of your resort, there isn't much to do, which can feel too quiet for some. It’s a true escape, for better or for worse.
Then there's our home, Gili Air. We think of it as the "Goldilocks" island; it's just right. Gili Air has mastered the art of being both a relaxing sanctuary and a vibrant community. You get the stunning beaches and world-class snorkelling of Meno, but with the social energy and culinary variety of a mini-Trawangan. It’s the island where you can have a different experience every day.
You can spend your morning paddleboarding in calm turquoise water, your afternoon snorkelling with turtles right off the beach, and your evening enjoying a delicious meal with your feet in the sand. There are enough lively beachfront bars for a fun night out, but you can always find a quiet corner to watch the stars. It’s the perfect mix for couples, families, solo travellers, and anyone looking for authentic island life.
We might be biased, but we believe Gili Air is the best Gili island to stay, and we built Mowies to be the ultimate expression of that belief. When we started in 2014, we wanted to create a place that felt like coming home. A place where you can stay, eat, and drink, all with the sand between your toes and a view of the ocean. Our unique saltwater lagoon, where the bar meets the restaurant, is the heart of our property; a place for guests to connect and relax.
Our restaurant serves up global flavours using fresh, sustainable ingredients from local farmers. Whether it’s our famous tuna burger for lunch or a handcrafted cocktail at sunset, you’re tasting the best of the island. We offer everything from budget-friendly Deluxe Bungalows to spacious Superior Bungalows with ocean views, ensuring there’s a perfect fit for every traveller. It’s all part of our "We are family" philosophy.
The best part about the Gilis is how easy it is to experience all three. Fast boats run between the islands multiple times a day, making day trips a breeze. You can base yourself on Gili Air and easily pop over to Meno for a snorkel session at the statues or even dip into the Gili T party for an afternoon before retreating to the peace of Air.
Getting here is simple. From Bali, trusted fast boat partners like Blue Water Express or Ekajaya will get you to Gili Air in about 2.5 hours. From Lombok, it’s a quick public boat ride from Bangsal Harbour. Once you're here, there are no cars or motorbikes, just bicycles, your own two feet, and the island's charming horse-drawn carts, know as cidomos.
Ultimately, the decision is yours. But if you’re looking for that perfect blend of relaxation, community, and adventure, Gili Air is waiting. It offers the quintessential island experience without the extremes, and we think you’ll fall in love with it just like we did.
